There is no way they could be economically viable and I doubt there is much market for an expensive new custom-made black powder shotgun. Without wanting to start a fight, I do feel they have gotten an extremely bad reputation at the hands of "gun writers" in the 20s and 30s many of whom were in the employ of American companies that couldn't make a damascus barrel. not surprising because they really aren't suitable for smokeless powder. I've also seen them on black powder, breech loading double rifles though I have no memory of ever seeing them on a smokeless double rifle. Of course they were made for shotguns right through the 20s. ![]() Pattern welded rifle barrels for muzzle loading rifles were made through the 1860s and probably well into the 70s and 80s. ![]()
